Fictional Fashion: Princess Edition.

We watched The Princess and the Frog last night. Short story: I loved it. It reminded me of growing up, when we would wait months for the newest Disney film to come out and then pile in the car to go see it at the theater. Long story: it got me thinking of all of the different fashions that leading cartoon ladies have donned throughout the years/films, and what their looks say about them. It also made me wonder if I could glean some fashion ideas from their signature looks. I tried to chose my favorite looks from the films, and not necessarily the most well-known looks.

Curious? Well, here we go!

Anastasia

Items:

Anastasia, though not a Disney movie, is one of my favorite cartoon characters. I love this outfit, which she wears during the climax of the movie, where she is chasing down Rasputin and claiming her right to the Romanov throne. I chose this yellow chiffon dress for a more modern take on the look, added a long string of pearls, just like Anastasia's and some pearl studs. A pair of gold sandals and aqua pashmina to be worn as a wrap finish off the princess inspired look. A simple hairstyle like Amy Adams would work great with this look.

Ariel
Items:
Perfect-fit slim scoopneck tee, $30, Qiana Skirt, $58, Forever21.com - New Arrivals - Accessories, $5.80, Enduring Espadrilles, $96, Sparkle & Fade Eyelet Bustier, $54.

Ariel, of
The Little Mermaid, is my second favorite cartoon heroine. I always loved this outfit from the movie, because I didn't really feel that her wedding dress was particularly attractive, nor could I make an outfit from the two purple sea shells she wears when she's a mermaid. I love the idea of a black corset over a simple light blue scoop neck, with an a-line skirt on the bottom. I felt like these black and white espadrilles captured the casual feel of the outfit and added an anchor necklace for thematic significance.:) I also added a bow headband instead of the giant ribbon Ariel has in her hair. A simple, slightly curled look like Julianne Moore's would go wonderfully with this outfit.

Jasmine
Items:
Women's skirts - pencil - Golden flambé pencil skirt - J.Crew, $150, Dominique's Sunglasses - $9.00 : Fashion Sunglasses at LuLus.com, $9, Michael Antonio Monaco Red Hot Nights Cage Heel - $42.00 : Fashion..., $42, Red Alert Top - $28.00 : Fashion Short Sleeve at LuLus.com, $28.

I always loved the red outfit Jasmine is forced to wear while Jafar is ruling the kingdom. I chose some fierce red leather heels, a low cut red blouse and a gold skirt to capture the essence of Jasmine's look. I added a ring and necklace in her signature color however to add a little color to the outfit. Red lips and tousled hair like Penelope Cruz's would work wonderfully with this sexy look.

Belle
Items:

My best friend and I used to play
Beauty and the Beast almost every day when we were little. Though I often had to play the part of the beast, as I was taller than my friend, I adored Belle, especially in the bookstore scenes. This blue J.Crew dress is almost the exact color of the bibliophilic princess' dress, and with a white blouse underneath, a polka dotted apron and some oh-so-appropriate rose earrings, any girl can play the part of Belle. I thought a simple side swept ponytail like Jennifer Garner's would look great with this look.

Cinderella
Items:
Banded Cyan Buttondown, $98, Petticoat Skirt, $53, Woven Clouds Belt, $40, Erupting Tones Scarf - Anthropologie.com, $78, Seychelles Alice Sandal - Free Overnight Shipping on New Styles, Free..., $55.

Though Cinderella is not at the high point in her life while wearing this ensemble, I kind of always loved the color scheme. I found this skirt which matches her dress almost perfect, added a button-up to tuck into the skirt and a white rope belt which adds a little of the white from the apron. I chose some simple, neutral heels, as this is not the most glamorous point of the film, and a printed head scarf which draws out the colors of the look. A swept back, voluminous hair style like Rachel McAdams', under the scarf of course, would look great with this outfit.

And finally, in a salute to the movie that inspired this post...

Tiana
Items:
Eliza J Belted Stretch Cotton Shirtdress, $130, Baker Cloche, $26, Mossimo® Black: Volume Back Trench Coat - Olive Green : Target, $40, Maxstudio Xamine Ot Mary Jane Platform - Free Overnight Shipping on....

I loved the blue dress that Tiana wore before she gets turned into a frog, and her wedding dress was obviously gorgeous, but I felt this 30's inspired look was a little more suitable for everyday. I chose a yellow shirt dress with a tie waist and collar detail to pair with an olive coat and adorable cloche. Simple brown peep toes and a retro hairstyle like Tyra Banks would give this casual look a finished flair.

What do you think? Which cartoon characters' style are you inspired by? Who was your favorite hero/heroine when you were growing up?

I too fell in love with Princess and the Frog. Seriously, that and Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and Hercules are my favorite Disneys!!!

Thanks for the princess inspiration.

Kali! I LOVE this post, and this is so crazy, because I was honestly just! thinking about this the other day, only with regard to using animated movies as hair inspiration. (I can't figure out what I want to do with mine! Ha.)

Also: Anastasia is my all-time favorite animated movie ever. Followed closely by Fern Gully and then Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid.

Also: I'm totally buying that anchor necklace right now. Hurrah! for nautical-themed accessories.

Love this post! Belle was my favorite growing up, although I always had visions of looking like Jasmine (my plan was to grow my hair out/always wear it in a braid and buy one of those awful swishy track suit type things everyone wore then in a aqua color). And Anastasia! Love that movie. I think I still know all the words to every song (which also applies to most Disney movies).

This is a FANTASTIC post. Belle was my favorite Disney character. My little girl self loved how much we had in common: names that started with B, brown hair & brown eyes, a love of reading.

So happy for the Anastasia movie love as well! I think that's a greatly unappreciated animated film. To echo what Elena just said above, I KNOW I could still sing all the songs from it. And I say that without a drop of shame. :-)

Thanks for such an entertaining post for my Friday morning!

This post is AMAZING! Great idea to post about, and great copy-cat looks! You inspire me. I wish I was more into clothes...kinda hard when you're poor and a frumpy new mommy. Oh well. Someday you will have to do me a makeover.

I love this! Feeling like my outfit was themed off of a disney princess would make my day and make me feel like a little more of a princess. You did a great job of modernizing these fabulous outifts.

I was allways a fan of Jasmine. Probably because she was the closest to my brown heritage that there was at the time. I loved her fiesty personality and willingness to have adventures. I also liked belle, she was graceful and beautiful but smart and strong also.
