The first of many house related consultations.

Well, it has begun. My asking you all for your help with the house. We are starting to pick things out for the house and I need your help deciding on cabinetry. I had wanted white cabinets going into our first meeting with the builder, but our Realtor and the builder didn't think this was the best idea. Their concerns were resale value, the easy dent ability/scuff ability of the paint and the extra time it would take the crew to paint the cabinets (thus pushing our deadline back). While I conceded at the time, I am having a serious problem letting go of the idea.

While I completely understand where they are coming from, I WANT MY WHITE CABINETS. It's not like the other options are BAD by any means, they're just not white.

They would be so beautiful!!!!

I just think white will make the space so much more open and bright. I also like white cabinets in the bathrooms so much more than natural wood. What do you think? I need help!!!

I am morally against white cabinets. (Sorry!)

What does Taylor think? I love the white, too. Sure it will scuff, but if they use a paint that's easy to clean, you can clean it. And before you sell, maybe you can repaint the doors. If this is a house you see yourselves growing in, and not just your starter home, go for white. If it is a starter home, go for the Alder.

Caveat that I don't have a home... sad renter. But I'm looking at houses this weekend!!

My cabinets are white and it does indeed make my smallish kitchen look a zillion times bigger. They do also make it look cleaner.

That being said, they're not 100% my taste and if I were building a house from scratch, like SOME LUCKY PEOPLE I KNOW ;), I would probably go for wood.

I'm pretty annoyed that the previous owners painted our cabinets light blue. I tried to strip it off but realized I'd never get them completely clean, so I painted them red instead.

However, since I stripped the paint off the first few doors, I had to do it for the rest. And, um, have picked up a few more hobbies since I started that give me limited free time. So I still have three blue doors.

This project has been going on since 2002. Seriously.

I vote for wood!

C'mon people...vote for wood!!!!

I do like white but I would also think about the resale value and it seems like white is "in" right now but could be "out" in a few years again. It's the same with cars. There are a lot more white cars being sold right because it is THE color right now. I wouldn't got with a traditional wood color. Maybe something that's a little off white. It's a tough choice! :)

Sam & I vote white (sorry Taylor!). It would really brighten the space up. What ever you decide on will look great with your design style!

Sorry cuz but I too vote for wood!! Being a new home owner myself, I will tell you I LOVE our hickory cabinets. If the wood is not dark you will love them. Also your beautiful blue paint would look great with them!! Last but not least MUCH better for resale!! Love you.

I like the look of white cabinets, but I have always always loved cherry oak cabinets. The dark wood just adds a romance and sophistication to the kitchen. Ultimately, its up to you and Taylor. Happy building!

I would go white.

First of all, it's what you really want. In my personal opinion, we don't really need to discuss the matter beyond that one simple point. After all, how many times does a person get to design their own house?

Second of all, you are someone who is very design minded, and I know that when you picture your white cabinets, you picture them along with a number of other elements in your kitchen design. The white cabinets are part of your "total look" and I'm guessing that alder cabinets would change that total look.

When we remodeled our kitchen I made some choices (countertops in particular) that I knew were not popular choices, and I knew I risked potential buyers walking into our house someday and saying "HUH?" But without those choices I wouldn't have achieved the look I was going for. WITH those choices however, my kitchen looks EXACTLY the way I dreamed it would and I have never once regretted any of them. And I get tons of compliments on how it turned out. You have a GREAT design sense and I would trust it.

And third, I love white cabinetry and I read a number of interior design blogs by gifted women who are obsessed with white cabinets. What's crisper and cleaner and brighter than white?!

Just my two cents. ;)

I would love a black and white themed kitchen. With a red Kitchen Aid obvs.

First, if you really love white, DO IT.

That said, there are plenty of other options in the wood category that are quite lovely, too. In my opinion (flawed, of course!), most higher end homes have wood (not white cabinets).

Maybe you'll see something you like during your Street of Dreams tour this weekend!

O.K. I'm an "other" voter, because I can't tell you which to choose. But I do have a thought. A long time ago B & K Martin taught Jeff and I to rate our level of importance on a given issue with a scale of 1-10. Then, when we're trying to make a decision, or communicate about a conflict, we can pull out the scale and discuss it more clearly. It's not that the person with the higher number "wins", it's just that it helps us understand each other better in communication.

With that said, I think you and Taylor - who is apparently voting for wood - need to talk about how important this is to you. Yes, it may impact resale value - when will that potentially be for you two? I'm sure there will be some buyers that love white, but it may take longer. And what if it does push back your deadline? How important is that to you? Like on a scale of 1-10, what's more important to you, getting in on time, or having white cabinets?

In general, I would recommend listening to your realtors, they're exceptionally smart, have been in both real estate and building for a long time, and they have your best interest at heart. Maybe you go back to them and say, "I'm having a hard time letting this go, can we revisit it?" Talk specifics in time, money, durability, etc. . .

One last thought - have you seen Steve and Sue's new kitchen? It's fantastic, all wood, and may just give you something to compare to. If you walk in and love it, maybe you could live with Alder. If you couldn't imagine living with it - you may need to go for white.

Sorry so long winded - Love you -Jen :)

I absolutely ADORE my white cabinets so I'm gonna say GET THEM if you want them!!! I think it totally lightens/opens up our kitchen more. I'm excited to see what you pick!

I'm a kitchen and bath designer at a high end showroom. Maybe things are different in the north west, but in upstate New York, I have never once heard anyone worry that white would affect the resale. I would guess at least 40% of the kitchens we do are white, however we sell cabinets that are pre-painted (Kraftmaid, Mouser, Style Craft, etc.), and therefore have a) a warranty and b) a special paint that shouldn't scuff, scratch, etc. I've never actually heard of the builder painting the cabinets themselves. I would be willing to bet that the picture in your post, the cabinets came pre-painted. There is also a wide variety of shades of white and off-white.

If you really want white, I say go for it.

This is a tough one, I have white cabinets but have you thought about going with a gray & cream? There are some really mouthwatering examples on the site Young House Love that are worth scrolling through. You can get a warmer, less sterile feel from playing tone on tone.

Just a thought!

I was able to basically "build" my house from scratch (the structure was already there, but it was such a disgusting CRAP-HOLE that eeeeeverything had to be ripped out and replaced, lest I die of black mold poisoning) and I would never have chosen anything but white cabinets. In my opinion, they just look so fresh and clean and PRETTY. And, I think they are a far easier canvas to work with, if you want to change the look of your kitchen in a few years. You have a whole-hearted vote for white from me!

We have white, I like 'em!

My assumption is that if you're building a new house, you plan to live there for some time. In all honesty, I think you should tell the realtor and builder to eff themselves. They don't have to live there.

White cabinets, like any other cabinets, can be gorgeous when other features (countertops, lighting, backsplash, floors, appliances) are tastefully chosen. If the look is cohesive, white cabinets are a perfectly acceptable choice. Remember, once the house is done? The Realtor and builder disappear. You're the one who has to walk in and out of that kitchen every day.

I would go with white. Especially if you have your heart set on it. Don't let yourself be talked into "resale" issues this early on - I mean yes, you probably shouldn't build a wading pool in the kitchen - that WILL affect resale - but I'm pretty sure you can find another white cabinet lover when/if the time comes that you sell it.
